North Shore Wine Week

More than forty restaurants and wine shops  are participating in North Shore Wine Week, a week-long celebration of food and wine north of Boston, August 21 - 27.  Six of the participating businesses are right here in Salem!

We are so excited to welcome November back to Salem!  October was fantastic... but after five (yes, five!) weeks of Haunted Happenings revelry, we are all ready to shift gears, slow down, and enjoy the wonderful, historic, and bewitching Salem at a calmer pace.

What better way to do that then over a delicious meal?  

Salem's restaurant community has never been so vibrant. New eateries featuring ethnic cuisine from around the world (Polish, Mexican, Italian) join local favorites to offer diners a range to suit every taste and budget.  You can experience these restaurants during Fall Restaurant Week, November 7 -11, presented by the Salem Chamber of Commerce.  During restaurant week, you can enjoy dinner at more than twenty restaurants that are offering prix fixed two course meals for $15.00 or prix fixed three course meals for $25.00.

We hope you will enjoy the restaurants all month, however, so Destination Salem is going to be giving away gift certificates to Salem restaurants including 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar, Caffe Graziani, Capt.'s, Cilantro, Finz, Green Land Cafe, the Regatta, Rockafellas, Salem Beer Works, and Victoria Station.  During restaurant week, we will give away Salem Chamber of Commerce gift certificates that can be used at any of the restaurants participating in Restaurant Week!

Mark your calendar for Fall Restaurant Week in Salem

Only five days remain in October, so it's time to start thinking past Halloween and Salem Haunted Happenings.  There is a fantastic Fall Restaurant Week is on the horizon! 

More than twenty restaurants are participating in Fall Restaurant Week, which is presented by the Salem Chamber of Commerce.  Restaurant Week is a great way to experience the best local cuisine at value pricing!  Participating restaurants will offer a two-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $15 and a three-course prix-fixe dinner menu for $25 (not including drinks, taxes, and gratuity).

A handy guide to Salem restaurants

I can't stop talking about the fact that 70 - yes, that's SEVENTY! - new businesses have opened in downtown Salem during the past 18 months.  Isn't that unbelievable?  Salem is booming!

Say, "yum," because many of those new businesses are restaurants. Salem Main Streets has created an awesome list of all of Salem's eateries, which you can download and print here.


We now have two taquerias in Salem (Howling Wolf and Comida), where once there was none. We have a Polish restaurant that will wow you with kielbasa, and some of the best pizza north of the North End.  You will find Chinese, Thai, American, seafood, Indian, Mexican, organic, coffee, ice cream, pizza, and sandwiches.  There are fast food, family fare, cafeteria style, and (my favorite) date night destinations.

If you haven't checked out the dining scene in Salem lately, it's time to cross the bridge.  Bring your appetite!

Emerson Inn by the Sea in Rockport has a divine fall menu!

When I'm not boasting about the fantastic restaurants and accommodations in Salem, I'm often talking about the restaurants and accommodations in Rockport.  Just 24 miles up the coast from Salem, Rockport is a town that makes you feel like you are in another place entirely.   Situated just outside of downtown Rockport is the lovely and historic Emerson Inn by the Sea.   This is a place that combines the best of dining and accommodations with a view that can't be beat!

I just received the new Fall menu from the Emerson Inn by the Sea, and it looks absolutely delicious!  In addition to classics like clam chowder and New England lobster dinners, foodies will delight at Pan Roasted Scallops with sauteed spinach, oyster mushrooms, and ginger-lobster vinaigrette, Beet Salad with goat cheese, red onions, and tarragon dressing, and Manicotti Fonduta, which is a traditional sweet pea and basil manicotti with fontina fondue gratinee.  And that's just the tip of the menu iceberg. 

The Emerson Inn by the Sea is a great option for accommodations when you are visiting Salem and exploring the region.  Rockport is an easy trip via the MBTA Commuter Rail, so you can park in Rockport and hop on the train - in October this is an especially appealing option because when you travel by train, you don't get mired up in the Haunted Happenings traffic that causes a bit of angst in Salem on October weekends.

The History of Victoria Station

I'm lifting today's blog post right off of Victoria Station's new web site. I'm doing so because I didn't know all of the back story (for instance, Johnny Cash) for this landmark restaurant. It is the oldest restaurant on Pickering Wharf, and as Salem's restaurant scene booms, Victoria Station remains a cornerstone of the city's myriad dining options.

And, I must add, they serve beets in the salad bar. Like having a fresh salad bar isn't great enough!

So, here it is, the Story of Victoria Station:

As many of you that have visited Victoria Station in the last 30 years know, its story is a long winding one.

It was 1970 when three graduates from Cornell Hotel School created an exciting new theme restaurant Victoria Station. They were inspired by the world famous Victoria Station. The style was historic and nostalgic utilizing a bright red phone booth, English taxi cabs, historic train memorabilia and authentic train cars turned into dining cars creating a nostalgic, warm and fun atmosphere.

The first Victoria Station was opened in San Francisco to great accolades and success. The chain quickly became one of the fastest growing corporations in America. By the 1980's the company had grown to over 100 restaurants across the globe with thousands of employees and famous singer Johnny Cash as their spokesperson. (It was his inspiration for his song Destination Victoria Station). Victoria Station also has its own autobiography written by historian Tom Blake called Prime Rib and Boxcars. Once Victoria Station came to New England, Victoria Station on Pickering Wharf began to create its own architectural style utilizing the train station inspiration of the original restaurant and the famous train station with touches of the historic Pickering Wharf in Salem, MA. where it is located. Victoria Station Salem created its own specific style while honoring the traditions and standards that became synonymous with the chain.

Trains Keep a Rollin'

Victoria Station Salem is now the last remaining one in the United States. It is proud to continue the Victoria Station name and restaurant management continues to pay close attention to the historic and nostalgic atmosphere with a new approach and even higher standards than today's customers demand. They specialize in classic New England cuisine with a fusion of the once great Steakhouse and still offer Victoria Station's signature slow roasted Angus Prime Rib and "All you can eat" Salad Bar. Today they are proud to use as many fresh local ingredients as possible and receive their seafood direct from local vendors on a daily basis.

Last year Vic's Boathouse opened, serving an even greater number of patrons with a brand new full service Oceanside bar and lounge, serving delectable cuisine and featuring live free local entertainment every weekend. This year the Boathouse has been improved with a fantastic selection local brews, spirits and an ever changing extensive wine and cocktail selection.

Lunch at Capt.'s

I had a lovely lunch at Capt's today! Just look at the pictures...

If you haven't been to Capt.'s, it is located on Pickering Wharf overlooking the marina, Central and Derby Wharves. That's the tall ship Friendship on the left. A lovelier view you could not have in Salem!


We ordered salads, and they were absolutely lovely! (So I had to take pictures...) Above is the garden salad with steak tips and balsamic dressing.

Below is Capt's Special Salad with lemon thyme dressing. I should have taken a side view - it's all wrapped up in cucumber strips.


A beautiful and yummy lunch, indeed! And, if the view is luring you in, the forecast all week is great.

TV Diner Invades Salem this Friday!

This Friday is shaping up to be an excellent day to shop and dine in Salem!

New England's most watched food and destination television show, TV Diner, will be in Salem for the North Shore Mystery Dine Around event to benefit the North Shore Cancer Walk. This exclusive event - tickets are $75 and available through the Salem Waterfront Hotel - will include cocktails and Hors d'oeuvres at the Salem Waterfront Hotel before guests are whisked away to an undisclosed restaurant for dinner. No need to worry, though, the participating restaurants include 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar, Capts, Victoria Station, Finz, and Green Land Cafe (not too shabby!).

While guests at the North Shore Mystery Dine Around are hob-nobbing with TV Diner host Billy Costa, Jenny Johnson will be talking fashion with the girls at J.Mode on Front Street. This "Girls Night Out" event is free and open to the public from 5:30 - 8:00 pm.

After the Girls' Night Out and the Mystery Dine Around, the TV Diner Salem experience will culminate with a VIP After Party at the Salem Waterfront Hotel. Featuring a DJ, dessert buffet, cash bar, and silent auction to benefit the North Shore Cancer Walk. The After Party will begin at 9:00 pm.

Check out the Passport Series at Sixty2

I don't generally need a reason to eat at Sixty2. Well, actually, the Warm Toffee Pudding does tend to be a driving force. I've heard equally good things about the cocktail selection, though. Oh, and the pasta is pretty darn divine.

Last year Chef Tony Bettencourt and his team introduced neighborhood nights as a great way to invite people to enjoy the fabulous food at a great price, mid-week. Now they've taken it up a notch with the Passport Series.

If you are craving a little bit of Europe, look no further than Pickering Wharf in Salem. Chef Bettencourt is preparing prefix dinners, which are being featured on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, that will take you to Spain, Italy, and France.

And it will only cost you $28 per person. Far less than airfare.

This is definitely worth checking out!

Six ways to raise your spirits in Salem this weekend

Usually I compile my list of Six in Salem as a recommendation, a thought, food for a whim. But this weekend's programming in Salem is SO OUTSTANDING that I'm writing this one as a "don't miss these six" list.

There's a definite buzz in the air, and the humidity is low, which makes it easier to hear (feel?!) the buzz! Salem's hoppin', so come on over.

1. Essex Street Fair, presented by the Salem Chamber of Commerce. It takes two words to get my family to the Essex Street Fair: Kettle. Corn. But there's oh-so-much more to it than that. Crafts, jewelry, paintings, stained glass, street performers, face painters, strolling musicians, and fun, fun, fun. The Essex Street fair stretches the length of Essex Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to Washington Street, and the hours have been stretched this year to 10am-6pm on Saturday and 10am-6pm on Sunday.

2. Tour the visiting tall ship Peacemaker, docked at Central Wharf until August 22. Tours of this 400-ton barquentine are free to the public between 10am-9pm on the weekends and 10am-7pm during the week. Central Wharf is part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. nps.gov/sama

3. The Ninth Annual Phillips House Car Meet is on Chestnut Street this Sunday from 12pm-3pm. There will be a great assortment of cars, including the two Pierce-Arrows and Model A Ford that are part of the Phillips' collection. This is a free event.

4. Improv on the Bricks! Join the Salem Theatre Company for their 3rd annual improv comedy bash. Bring a lawn chair! Bring padding! This is the perfect way to add hilarity to your Saturday. Saturday and Sunday at 3:30pm. (It's worth noting that Maria's Sweet Somethings is RIGHT THERE, next to the bricks, selling dozens of excellent flavors of ice cream. And it's a known fact that ice cream is the perfect accompaniment for comedy.)

5. Crowninshield-Bentley Open House at the Peabody Essex Museum. In conjunction with Heritage Days, the PEM is offering free public tours of the Crowninshield Bentley House every hour on the hours. Period kids games will be presented in the yard ona drop in basis. The PEM opened the 1727 Crowninshield-Bentley House to public tours in June of this year.

6. Eat outside. Have you seen the weather forecast? Find a table street-side at Gulu Gulu Cafe, Caffe Graziani, Green Land Cafe, Asahi, The Lobster Shanty, or Rockafellas and enjoy great food and libation while watching the world walk by. Or, find a table waterside at The Black Lobster, Finz, Capts, or Victoria Station and relax while watching the tide change and the boats make their way in and out of Salem. Ahhhhhh.

How We See Salem: Author Brunonia Barry

Here is the second in our new series of how we see Salem.

Today we feature Salem author Brunonia Barry. Born and raised in Massachusetts, and currently living in Salem, Barry made her literary debut with the critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling novel The Lace Reader (William Morrow). Her second novel, The Map of True Places, hits booksellers in the U.S. tomorrow, May 4. Like The Lace Reader, The Map of True Places is set in Salem, and entwines many of our favorite historic sites, restaurants, and neighborhoods into the story of Zee Finch.
