Chocolate & Wine Tasting tickets are going fast

Tickets for the Tenth Annual (has it been ten years already?!) Chocolate & Wine Tasting at Hamilton Hall are going fast!  They have been on sale for a week, and word on the street is that they are more than half-sold.

This is an event worth planning for.  Don't wait - there's not going to be a Groupon or another social deal.  This is a once-a-year opportunity to indulge in decadent treats that range from chocolate mousse to chocolate dipped strawberries to chocolate ice cream to chocolate gateau, and every chocolate in between.

Participating restaurants include:

62 Restaurant and Wine Bar
Adriatic Restaurant & Bar
Ben & Jerry’s
Busa Wine and Spirits
Café Polonia
Caffe Graziani
Capt.’s Premium Steak & Seafood Grill
Captain Dusty’s Ice Cream
Finz Seafood & Grill
The Great Escape
Green Land Café
Gulu-Gulu Cafe
Pamplemousse
Rockafellas
Salem Waterfront Hotel
Sweet Adeline’s
Thai Place
Victoria Station
Ye Olde Pepper Co.

This is the festive kick-off to the annual Salem So Sweet Festival.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at the Salem Chamber of Commerce, 265 Essex Street.  This event is produced by the Salem Chamber of commerce and Salem Main Streets.

I highly recommend making dinner reservations for afterward (or, perhaps, before), because the restaurants are always busy on Chocolate & Wine night.

Here are the details, in a nutshell:

10th Annual Chocolate & Wine Tasting
Friday, February 10 from 6:30 - 8:30
Location: Hamilton Hall, 9 Chestnut Street, Salem, MA
Sponsored by the Salem Waterfront Hotel.

Ice sculptures worth a trip

21 ice sculptures were installed throughout downtown Salem this morning.  The weather was gray, but the sculptures were wonderful, and the chocolate plentiful - proving yet again that Salem is So Sweet.

My boys and I walked around town and saw 18 of the 21 sculptures today.  Here are our pictures...

Dutch Tulips at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Dragon at the Trolley Depot.

Salem Five on Essex Street.

Rapunzel at Mud Puddle Toys.

Jazz piano at Rockafellas.

Snowflake at Lappin Park (by the Bewitched statue)

Salem State University at Lappin Park.

Champagne Glasses at Adriatic Cafe.

Sled at Maria's Sweet Somethings.

Always a highlight of Salem So Sweet - Maria's Sweet Somethings' chocolate fountain.

Beautiful lady at Rouge.

Anchors Aweigh at the Salem Waterfront Hotel.

Big Tuna at Finz.

Mermaid on Pickering Wharf.

Through the Looking Glass at Sophia's.

Salem Film Fest at CinemaSalem.

The sculptures will stay up as long as the weather allows, and many of them are under tents or tarps to protect them from rain.  These are definitely a great excuse to get out and walk around a snowy, wintery Salem.

Salem So Sweet Chocolate & Wine

The Chocolate & Wine tasting at Hamilton Hall last night was decadent and delicious.  250 people gathered to sample the sweetest fare from Salem's restaurants and specialty shops. There were truffles and chocolate dipped strawberries, chocolate martinis and flourless chocolate torte, Black Forest mousse and Nutella pizza.  The wines were red, white, sweet, dry, and sparkling. Oh, and the dramatic and flaming Cherry Flambe over vanilla ice cream.

Barbie Cake from Coffee Time Bake shop

Chocolate-tinis from Finz.

The crowd mingling, tasting, sampling...

Chef John Andrews from Victoria Station working the cherry flambe.

It's a good thing this evening of indulgence only happens once a year!

Salem So Sweet is produced by Salem Main Streets and Salem Chamber of Commerce.  Events and promotions continue through February 14.

Salem So Sweet in 2010

It is time again for Salem So Sweet, the weekend created with chocoholics in mind!

On February 5, 2010, Salem will become a haven of chocolate, wine, and ice. The weekend kicks off with the annual Chocolate & Wine Tasting at historic Hamilton Hall (tickets are $20 each, available from the Salem Chamber of Commerce). This event is always crowded, so get there early - and remember to eat some protein before you go, because the samplings are decadent. Chocolate truffles, chocolate-dipped strawberries, chocolate cheesecake, chocolate mousse, hot chocolate, cold chocolate, iced chocolate... last year some of the wine was chocolate, as well as red, white, and sparkling.

I like to make a night of it and go out for dinner (Calories? What calories?!) after the Chocolate & Wine tasting, I'm not alone in this, however, so you may want to make a reservation if your heart is set on a particular restaurant. Check out your options on Salem.org.

Come back downtown on Saturday for the ice sculptures. Organizers at Salem Main Streets expect more than 12 ice sculptures to be on display around town. Keep an eye on the weather forecast - if it warms up (like it did last year) you want to come out on Saturday to walk around and see the ice. If it's very cold, the ice will be around throughout the weekend and into the week.

I wouldn't be doing my job if I
didn't mention how easy it would be to make a weekend out of Salem So Sweet! Check out the off-season hotel rates on Salem.org and find some cozy quarters, walking distance from everything, that will make your weekend a perfect escape.

Locations of the sculptures will be posted here and at SalemMainStreets.org, and it's a lot of fun to wander from Town House Square to Pickering Wharf looking at the sculptures. There is also going to be a mixed media sculpture (ice is one of the media!) at the Phillips House on Chestnut Street, so be prepared to wander that way, too!

Most of Salem's stores and restaurants run Salem So Sweet promotions, which range from sale pricing to chocolate infused menu items to chocolate samples, so be sure to browse a bit while you wander. You'll need to warm your fingers and toes, anyway. No better way to do that than with chocolate!

Also worth noting: February 7 is the last day of the Iris Apfel: Rare Bird of Fashion exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum. If you haven't seen it, make time to do so. It is a fabulous and fun exhibition of fashion and personality.

There is no better way to kick-off the Valentine's Season in Salem then with chocolate and ice, so mark your calendars and make your plans!
