Sweet weather, sweet performance, sweet art in Salem over the weekend

Congratulations to Salem Main Streets and the organizers of the Salem Arts Festival this past weekend.  Fantastic weather was a golden backdrop to excellent art - and art of all kinds.

Here are a few pictures I took of the Main Stage on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall.  The hula hoopers were awesome.  The weather, the music, the dancing, the take-out from Comida or Essex's NY Pizza (how often does everyone in your family agree on what to eat?!)... all ingredients for a near perfect day in Salem.

Roost & Beehive on Boston.com

We love to see our friends recognized in the media!  Jamie and Kate, who own Roost, Beehive, and now Scrub, were featured on Boston.com this weekend.

Here's the scoop:

The economy is sputtering, but you wouldn't know it from the rising fortunes of a pair of North Shore entrepreneurs. Jamie Metsch and Kate Leavy -- recent North Carolina transplants-- have established themselves as a married force of nature in Salem, having launched no less than three wittily stocked home furnishing and gift shops in the city's burgeoning, post-witchy downtown. Among their shops: Roost and Beehive, two stores in Salem that are located side by side. (Your Town, June 5, 2011)

Thanks, again, Boston.com for recognizing some of Salem's excellent retailers!

Man Ray | Lee Miller Partners in Surrealism

Rare photographs, paintings, sculpture and drawings tell the story of the artists' brief but intense association and reveal the nature of their creative partnership.

Opening June 11

From 1929 to 1932, Man Ray and Lee Miller -- two pivotal players in the Surrealism movement -- lived together in Paris, first as teacher and student and later as lovers. Their mercurial relationship resulted in some of the most powerful work of each artist's career, and helped shape the course of modern art and photography.

Don't miss opening day! Films, art and personal accounts enliven the discussion of Surrealism, Man Ray and Lee Miller. PEM Photography Curator Phillip Prodger introduces Man Ray's films. Lee Miller's son, Antony Penrose, offers insight into his mother's life and art in a critically acclaimed presentation.

NOTE Films are for adults. Viewer discretion advised: nudity.
