Fundraising Lecture by Historian Jim McAllister

Local historian, and owner of Derby Square Tours, Jim McAllister will be hosting "Love Song for Salem: A Visual Tribune" on June 30 in the auditorium at the Salem Regional Visitor Center on New Liberty Street.

McAllister calls the show “an impressionistic portrait of a place, a visual poem , a  nostalgic time capsule  containing almost than 300 images representing four seasons, five neighborhoods, and fifteen years (1978- 1993) of photographing.”  There are images of sunsets and snowstorms, streetscapes and street people, walking malls and  walking trails, and  museums  and mansions . Also featured are many past Salem event:  sports celebrations, house tours and  garden tours, concerts - and circuses - on the common, parades, museum openings, and, of course,  Halloween “scenes.”

The majority of the photographs in the show were taken in the downtown business district, Salem Willows, Derby Street, the Salem Common, and the McIntire Historic District. But the people  - among them familiar faces like the Cahill brothers , Laurie Cabot, Ted  Buczko, Tony Salvo, ‘Sailor Bill,” Buddy Hobbs,  and Jello the Clown – who appear come from all corners of the city.

There will be two showings of “Love Song for Salem: A Visual Tribute” on June 30th, at 5:30 and 7:30.

Admission is $10.  For reservations and tickets contact Jim at culturecorner@gmail.comor (978)745-6314.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Essex National Heritage Commission and North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, two organizations that promote tourism in Salem and the region.

A great way to display your memories of Salem

I was in the Trolley Depot this week, and they have some cute new frames that would look great with your photos from Salem in them!

In addition to clever frames, the Trolley Depot has a great selection of books about Salem and Witchcraft, great t-shirts (including the "Are you a good witch  or a bad witch" shirt), punny gifts, and ornaments for Christmas and beyond.

While it's always better to shop at the Depot, or its sister store Salemdipity on Pickering Wharf, in person, they have a great online store as well.

The Trolley Depot is on the Pedestrian Mall at 181 Essex Street.

Ten Best Reasons to Ride the Salem Ferry

We are so excited that the Salem Ferry is launching its 2011 season on Saturday, June 11th. The ferry provides daily service between the Salem Wharf at Blaney Street and Long Wharf North in Boston.

To celebrate our favorite mode of transportation between Boston and Salem, here are Destination Salem's TEN BEST Reasons to ride the Salem Ferry.

  1. To celebrate the grand opening of the season, the Salem Ferry will be giving away a free soft pretzel and slushy beverage to the first 300 guests over the weekend!
  2. The Salem Wharf at Blaney Street has undergone an extreme make-over, with paved parking, landscaping and a new terminal building (which is coming soon).
  3. Good food at the Galley, including Ben & Jerry's ice cream, pretzels, hummus dip, kosher hotdogs, muffins, fresh fruit and Legal Seafood chowder.
  4. Cold beer and creative cocktails.
  5. Count the lighthouses you'll see... Derby Light, Pickering Light, Hospital Point, Marblehead Light...
  6. Historic narration about Boston, Marblehead and Salem harbors.
  7. Cruise & Dine in Boston and Salem - show your ticket stub and save at participating restaurants on both sides of your trip!
  8. Free parking in Salem.  No traffic in Boston. (Is that two things?)
  9. From Long Wharf North you are a stone's throw from the New England Aquarium, Faneuil Hall, and the North End (Pasta, Pastries and Pizza, oh my!).
  10. Like the Boston's Best Cruises' motto says: It's more than just a boat ride!
Make your plans today!  The Salem Ferry departs from Boston daily at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM (10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday nights).   The ferry departs Salem at 7:00 AM (Monday-Friday) 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 7:00 PM (9:00 PM on Friday and Saturday nights).

It's particularly awesome to take one of the evening ferries during a full moon.

You can buy tickets online or at the ticket offices in Boston and Salem.

Sweet weather, sweet performance, sweet art in Salem over the weekend

Congratulations to Salem Main Streets and the organizers of the Salem Arts Festival this past weekend.  Fantastic weather was a golden backdrop to excellent art - and art of all kinds.

Here are a few pictures I took of the Main Stage on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall.  The hula hoopers were awesome.  The weather, the music, the dancing, the take-out from Comida or Essex's NY Pizza (how often does everyone in your family agree on what to eat?!)... all ingredients for a near perfect day in Salem.

Roost & Beehive on Boston.com

We love to see our friends recognized in the media!  Jamie and Kate, who own Roost, Beehive, and now Scrub, were featured on Boston.com this weekend.

Here's the scoop:

The economy is sputtering, but you wouldn't know it from the rising fortunes of a pair of North Shore entrepreneurs. Jamie Metsch and Kate Leavy -- recent North Carolina transplants-- have established themselves as a married force of nature in Salem, having launched no less than three wittily stocked home furnishing and gift shops in the city's burgeoning, post-witchy downtown. Among their shops: Roost and Beehive, two stores in Salem that are located side by side. (Your Town, June 5, 2011)

Thanks, again, Boston.com for recognizing some of Salem's excellent retailers!
